Pet Market
I work in photography for its connection with reality and its ability to directly convey a certain point with enormous visual tension and dramatic feeling. My work describes a dark and damp pet market in my city, in which I saw bare-chested breeders who were only interested in profit, puppies huddled in the corner, pets in cages waiting for the fate of being chosen, and so on. My photos involve the mental endurance of pets’ pain and public ignorance of pets’ rights in China. All my photographs adopt a black-and-white view and contain iron cages as a major element that occupies most of the picture. By using this visually intense color contrast, I want to let the viewers feel the repression of the pet market, to inspire their empathy. Another trick I adopted to give the same effect is that I captured the emotions that were shown in the puppies’ eyes, serving as a contrast to humans. For years, pets are not treated as live but toys and products, and the situation is getting worse. My goal is to inspire those who see my work to be aware of the dark side of a pet industry and to raise their consciousness on pet rights and animal conservation.
